TORETE

Moonstar88, originally established in 1999, has gone through numerous lineup changes over the years, yet has stayed relevant in the music industry up to this day. Part of their undying charm was because of their primary focus on the music, always making sure that their songs were relatable, catchy, and most importantly, heartfelt. One of their most popular songs, “Torete,” is a thriving example of this genuine love and respect for music.

“Torete,” from the album Popcorn and released back in 2000, remains to be one of the band’s most iconic hits. Torete has many versions nowadays, like the version of Moira Dela Torre. The version of Moira Dela Torre of Torete was the song of the movie “Love You To The Stars and Back” (Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia).

In Filipino, Torete means speechless. The song talks about the shyness that overcomes you when you see the love of your life. You want to tell them but basically the words won’t come out.

“Torete,” in all its simplicity, is able to communicate the immense feeling of kilig between the meeting of two individuals, the spark between them, and the initial interaction they have as they fall in love with each other. The lyrics are written simply, but the way the song progresses, the way it’s sung, and the gentleness of it all is, plainly and simply, nakakakilig.

This song was one of my Kuya’s favorite song. He said that its not just a song but a story that has a music on it. A story that everyone can relate on.
